| In the Christian's life there is no substitute for the keen awareness that my Shepherd is nearby. There is nothing like Christ's presence to dispel the fear, the panic, the terror of the unknown. We live a most uncertain life. Any hour can bring disaster, danger and distress from unknown quarters... Then in the midst of our misfortunes there suddenly comes the awareness that He, the Christ, the Good Shepherd is there. It makes all the difference. His presence in the picture throws a different light on the whole scene. Suddenly things are not half so black nor nearly terrifying. The outlook changes and there is hope... It is the knowledge that my Master, my Friend, my Owner has things under control even when they may appear calamitous. This gives me great consolation, repose, and rest.

| Psalms 63:1, "O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul
thirst for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where
there is no water." (NIV)
Devotion:
There is a
tale of an elderly woman in the church who served the Lord for years.
Instead of seeking the help of others, she did most of the work
herself. She was head of women's ministry, taught Sunday school, sung
in the choir, was on the prayer team, and counseled the pastor on a
regular basis. She was tired, worn out, and longed for heaven. Yet,
because there was still so much work for her to do, she feared that she
would never die. Eventually she did die. I guess God wanted His job
back.
Nevertheless, from the perspective of most,
today's successful leaders, whether in the Christian world or secular,
are much like this woman.
Somewhere between her
calling and service to God she took over, rushed ahead, and set her own
agenda. It happens to the best of us. In our service to God we can
easily slip into pursuing ministry instead of pursuing Jesus, and miss
the purpose of our existence. The same is true in every facet of our
lives. The pursuit of happiness, opportunity, or even being a good
parent, can get in the way of simply pursuing Jesus.
What
are you pursuing? What is it that you really want? Is it a successful
career that you covet? Is it to be a musician, a doctor, or to author a
book? Maybe it's a spouse you're dreaming of, or the desire to be a mom
that you're longing for. Whatever your dream is, it's a God-given
dream. In addition to giving you the dream, God has also given you what
it takes to make your dream come true. We don't arrive at our dreams by
our own efforts, nor can we make them come true all by ourselves. We
get there by pursuing God.
I have found in my own
life and ministry that when God reigns in my heart, blessings and
opportunities pour down faster than I can make them happen myself. The
best way to get where you're going is to surrender your dreams to God.
We
are always in a hurry. God never is. While He has given us the vision
of what we are to become, it may not be a reality in us yet. We have to
let God work in our lives until we are ready. The dream is not what
needs shaping. It's us. God often prepares us for our dreams through
adversity in our lives.
Don't be discouraged if your
dream seems unreachable. No matter what your circumstances are, God is
at work shaping and preparing you for it. You and I may achieve some
sort of success by our own pursuit, but it will never satisfy us like
pursuing Jesus and waiting on Him to bring our dreams to pass.
When
God alone is our true treasure, reward, and prize; when He is all we
long for, seek after, love and adore, then He gives us the desires of
our hearts. Only then are we ready to fulfill our purpose. No other
person or thing can satisfy us like Jesus or prepare us for our
God-given dreams. What are you pursuing?

I wonder what my purpose in life is. God's voice has been very quiet, or maybe my mind is just too loud and I can't hear Him. I complain and complain and complain and complain about things. I have no patience and my reactions are now a bad habit that i cant shake off. I need a new heart. | | |

| First Born
Newscasters and TV talk show hosts tend to be first born or only
children. Prominent examples include: Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings,
Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, Oprah, Donahue, Geraldo, Arsenio Hall and Rush
Limbaugh. Over half of U.S presidents were firstborns. Clearly,
firstborns are natural leaders. They also tend to be reliable,
conscientious and perfectionists who don't like surprises. Although,
firstborns are typically aggressive, many are also compliant people
pleasers. They are model children who have a strong need for approval
from anyone in charge.
Only Children
Only children are firstborns in triplicate. They are even more
responsible and even bigger perfectionists. They usually get along
better with people older than themselves.
Middle Child
These kids are the most difficult to pin down. They are guaranteed
to be opposite of their older sibling, but that difference can manifest
in a variety of ways. Middle children often feel like their older
brother gets all the glory while their younger sister escapes all
discipline. Because the middle child feels that the world pays him less
attention, he tends to be secretive; he does not openly share his
thoughts or feelings.
Middle children may not feel they have a special place in the
family so friends and peer groups become much more important. They can
usually read people well, they are peacemakers who see all sides of a
situation, they are independent and inventive. If a firstborn is a
company's CEO, the middle child is the entrepreneur.
Last Born
Babies of the family are social and outgoing, they are the most
financially irresponsible of all birth orders. They just want to have a
good time. Knowing that these kids love the limelight, it's no surprise
to discover that Billy Crystal, Goldie Hawn, Drew Carey, Jim Carey and
Steve Martin are all lastborns.
While lastborns may be charming, they also have the potential to be
manipulative, spoiled or babied to the point of helplessness.
"The last born is the one who will probably still have a pet name although he's 29 and has a masters degree," Leman says.
Exceptions?
Some variables can affect the above descriptions. For instance, if
there are several years between the first and second child, the second
child will have some characteristics of a firstborn. Or, if the
firstborn is a girl and the second a boy, the son will have some
first-born characteristics because he is the family's first male
offspring. Sibling deaths, adoptions and blended families can also
upset the traditional birth order.
Children are all different and have to be parented in different
ways. Dr. Leman recommends the following as a guide to parent kids by
their birth order. | | |
